The 90-day trial of the Eureka Springs Social District concluded Sept. 30, marking the completion of an initiative researched and advanced by the Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce and its tourism subcommittee as a potential tool to support local businesses and enhance the downtown visitor experience.
The social district launched July 1 after approval by the Eureka Springs City Council. During the trial, participating ABC-licensed establishments were permitted to serve one alcoholic beverage in an approved non-glass container for consumption within the designated district and during established operating hours.
Throughout the 90-day period, the chamber and the tourism subcommittee worked with participating businesses and the city to support implementation of the program. The chamber distributed wristbands and educational materials, communicated operating guidelines, gathered feedback from businesses and helped address questions as establishments and visitors became familiar with the district.
After the Sept. 30 conclusion, the committee completed its wind-down efforts by collecting remaining wristbands, removing chamber-provided social district signage from downtown, including the A-frame signage in Basin Spring Park, and notifying both the broader business community and participating ABC-licensed establishments that the trial had ended.
“The purpose of a trial like this is to take an idea, put it into practice, and give our community an opportunity to evaluate it based on actual experience,” said Devin Henderson of the Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce. “Our role as a chamber is to listen to our businesses, research opportunities that could strengthen our local economy, advocate for those ideas when we believe they deserve consideration, and then be willing to put in the work to help make them successful.”
Feedback collected by the chamber from participating establishments has included businesses reporting positive customer response and local participation, with several expressing support for seeing the social district return. The chamber expects that feedback to be considered alongside data collected by the city as the overall trial is evaluated.
The work is also moving into its next phase.
The chamber and tourism subcommittee have completed the requirements provided by the Mayor’s Office for submitting a proposed expansion of the social district. The proposed expansion is intended to include additional businesses and provide an opportunity to gather information across a broader area and during additional times of the year.
The chamber is scheduled to meet with the Mayor’s Office on Tuesday, Oct. 13, to discuss the information and data to be included in the final report from the trial period. A workshop is expected to be scheduled in November after the remaining data has been compiled.
“We are encouraged by much of what we heard during the trial, but we also want the complete picture,” Henderson said. “The next step is to review the final information, learn from these first 90 days, and continue working with the city, businesses, and community to determine what the social district should look like moving forward.”
The chamber views the initiative as part of its broader economic development and advocacy role in Eureka Springs — identifying opportunities, researching potential solutions, bringing new ideas forward and working with community partners to test and evaluate those ideas.
The Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce will continue to provide updates to its members and the community as the final trial information becomes available and discussions regarding the future of the Social District continue.
