Eureka Springs voters elected Michael Carey as the city’s next clerk-treasurer in the Tuesday, Nov. 3, general election. According to unofficial results, Carey received 463 votes (58.31 percent), defeating parks commission member and local business owner Aaron Borey, who received 331 votes (41.69 percent).
Carey, a historical tour guide and concierge for the Basin Park Hotel, has lived in Eureka Springs for the past 12 years. He is the husband of city council member Steve Holifield, who is now mayor-elect after incumbent Mayor Butch Berry opted out of a runoff in that race.
“Thank you so much for putting your trust in me, for voting for me for city clerk,” Carey said on his Facebook page after the unofficial results were announced. “It really, really means the world. I promise you, I won’t let you down. I’m going to make you proud, and I’m going to take this job very, very seriously.”
During an Oct. 15 candidate forum, Carey said he had been assured that his serving as clerk-treasurer would not create a conflict if Holifield were elected mayor because the clerk-treasurer’s duties had been reduced.
“The most important thing to note, I believe, is that the position no longer handles any of the financial situations, so it has been assured to us that it would not be in conflict with Steve running for mayor,” Carey said.
