Glutamine and ALA

Here are two supplements that have with stood the test of time. Though, like anything that has been around awhile people tend to forget them or take them for granted. The supplements are glutamine and Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA).

Glutamine is an amino acid. It is generally recognized as safe so most people can be assured it is likely to be good for them. Many use it for improving gut function and for improving the immune system, especially when elevated stress has caused a problem. If you know in advance it can be helpful in improving recovery from surgery or burns and it is shown to benefit those with long COVID. There are many studies published in Pub Med supporting the use during COVID infection and during the progression of long-term COVID. People with kidney or liver disease shouldn’t use supplemental glutamine.

If I were going to choose just one antioxidant out of dozens that stand out the choice would be surprisingly easy. Understand, standout antioxidants include vitamin C, Pycnogenol, NAC as well as a long list of others. Antioxidants are needed as they do many good things for us like getting rid of nasties that can be very harmful to our health in the long run. The one I would choose is Alpha Lipoic Acid with a close second being saffron herb, not the spice.

According to the Physician’s Desk Reference for Nutritional Supplements, Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA) has proven use (in large, multicenter, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled tests) especially for reducing pain, numbness and burning sensations in legs and feet because of Type 2 Diabetes. But the long list of benefits doesn’t stop there. People who are pre-diabetic find ALA helps with regulating sugar in the blood, which might slow down or stop the onset of full-blown Type 2 Diabetes.
