Jimmy Keith Girkin

Jimmy Keith Girkin was born on June 27, 1936, in Melbourne, Arkansas, to Festus Pierce Girkin and Clara Smith Girkin. A man of deep kindness, unwavering dedication, and a quick wit, Jim passed away peacefully at his home in Holiday Island at the age of 88, leaving behind a legacy of service, generosity, and love.

After serving in the United States Air Force, Jim found his true home in Eureka Springs, moving there in January 1966 and purchasing Eureka Drug Company. For more than 40 years, he worked tirelessly as the town’s pharmacist, often the only one, becoming a trusted figure in the community. His job was never just about filling prescriptions; it was about taking care of people. Whether delivering medicine in the middle of a snowstorm or stepping away from his own Thanksgiving dinner to help a neighbor get a roll of film to capture family memories, Jim never hesitated to lend a hand. It was just the kind of man he was.

Upon retiring from pharmacy, Jim turned his attention to real estate, establishing Girkin Rental Properties with his beloved wife, Patsy. With their daughter Jennifer’s help, the business thrived and continues today, providing affordable housing for the Eureka Springs community, one more way Jim left a lasting impact on the town he loved.

Jim’s dedication to service didn’t stop at business. He was a devoted member of Kiwanis, Rotary, and the Elks Club and served for years on the Eureka Springs School Board, always working to improve the community he held dear. He believed in hard work, fair play, and looking out for his neighbors.

Beyond his career and community service, Jim had a sharp mind and a love of competition, especially at the poker table. He played tournament poker at an elite level, mastering the art of patience, strategy, and knowing when to take a risk. He didn’t win every hand, but he won far more than he lost, which, as he would say, is what really matters in poker.

For years, he was a familiar presence at the casino, where younger players quickly learned not to underestimate the sharp-witted gentleman across the table.

Above all, Jim’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his children: Tracy and Heather Girkin of Eureka Springs, Sandy and Robert Battioni of South Korea, Brent and Deborah Girkin of Blue Springs, Missouri, Robert and Kathy Girkin of Eureka Springs, Jennifer Girkin and Casey and Suzanne Cahoon of Fayetteville. He also leaves behind his sister, Shirley Moon of Searcy, Arkansas; eight grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, and a large circle of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will carry his memory forward.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Festus and Clara Girkin; his first wife, Jane Girkin; his second wife, Patsy Girkin; and his brothers, Bob and Gene Girkin.

Jim will be laid to rest at Eureka Springs Cemetery, the town that shaped him and that he, in turn, helped shape. Service details are pending.

In honor of Jim’s lifelong dedication to service and community, donations may be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, New York 10306.

Jim lived his life much like he played poker, with patience, skill, and just the right amount of risk. Though his seat at the table is now empty, his presence will always be felt in the town, the family, and the friendships he left behind.
