Safe To Be announces partnership to build 1st dedicated housing unit

Safe To Be, a local non-profit dedicated to providing a safe haven for romantic and gender- diverse (commonly known as LGBTQ+) individuals facing housing insecurity, announces a groundbreaking partnership with ECHO Village, a unique housing development designed for 26 small, affordable homes, shared common grounds embracing the concept of community living, to build the organization’s first dedicated housing unit. This marks a significant step toward creating a secure living space for marginalized romantic and gender-diverse individuals.

Haven for Marginalized Communities Established in 2018, Safe To Be was born from the vision of co-founders Ethan and David Avanzino to offer a haven for romantic and gender-diverse individuals, particularly those ostracized because of their gender identity. The organization has raised funds through creative initiatives like drag shows, comedy nights and craft sales.

Undeterred by Challenges

While the pandemic and resource constraints necessitated a plan change, Safe To Be persevered. The organization started providing emergency housing in December 2020, assisting three individuals. In 2023, they expanded their reach by welcoming the Eureka Springs Transgender Collective (ESTC) into their support network.

Building a Brighter Future

The new partnership with ECHO Village, led by Ethan Avanzino and Suzie Bell, signifies a monumental step forward. Together, they will build a dedicated home specifically designed for the needs of marginalized individuals.
