Nine JPs seek re-election to quorum court

Nine of Carroll County’s 11 justices of the peace have filed as candidates for re-election in 2024, according to the county clerk’s office.

The filing period for county and school candidates began Monday, Nov. 6, and ended Tuesday, Nov. 14.

The preferential primary will be held March 5, 2024, with the general election scheduled for Nov. 5.

Two incumbent JPs face challengers in 2024, although neither of those races are in the March primary. There is one contested JP race on the primary ballot, in District 9. In that race, Aaron Hall and Jonathan Phillips are both running as Republicans. Aaron Hall is the son of incumbent District 9 JP Roger Hall, who is not seeking re-election after several terms.

District 1 JP Jack Deaton is running as an independent, as is Gerry Ball, who is challenging incumbent JP Harrie Farrow in District 3. Neither Deaton or Ball’s name will appear on the primary ballot but both will be on the general election ballot in November.

Other JPs who have filed as candidates for re-election are Farrow, District 2 JP Bruce Wright, District 4 JP Hunter Rivett, District 5 JP Matt Phillips, District 6 JP Craig Hicks, District 7 JP Kellie Matt, District 10 JP Jerry King and District 11 JP John Howerton. Farrow and Howerton are running as Democrats, while the remainder of the JPs seeking re-election are running as Republicans.

Howerton is being challenged by Republican Caroline Rogers. Howerton and Rogers will be opponents in the November general election, as will Farrow and Ball.

District 8 JP Francisco Pedraza, who was appointed to his seat, was ineligible to file as a candidate for 2024. The District 8 seat will again be filled by gubernatorial appointment.

Dustin Walker and Teddy Willing have filed as candidates for the Zone 1 seat on the Berryville School Board, while Nicki Hill and Tori Warren are candidates for the Zone 2 seat on the Green Forest School Board. Gayla Wolfinbarger is seeking re-election to the Position 2 at large seat on the Eureka Springs School Board. She is unopposed.

Todd Summers is seeking re-election as Central Township constable. He is unopposed. Summers is a Republican. Randy Langhover, also a Republican, is unopposed for re-election as Northeast Township constable.

Incumbent Jay Galyen is a candidate for re-election as Western Township constable. He is a Republican. Jim Wallace has filed as a Democratic challenger to Galyen.
