It’s practically unheard of for two players to account for all of one team’s scoring in a high school basketball game, but that’s what happened when the Eureka Springs Highlanders hosted Life Way Christian on Dec. 13 at Highlander Arena.
Fortunately for the Highlanders, seniors Dylan Johnson and Shane Holloway were productive enough to lead Eureka Springs to a 65-53 victory. Johnson poured in a career-high 45 points and Holloway added 20.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen that before,” Eureka Springs coach Brian Rambo said.
Johnson, who holds the school record for three-pointers in a single game and in a season, made eight long-distance shots against Life Way. But Rambo said Johnson was dominant all over the court.
“He just scored the ball from everywhere,” Rambo said. “We put him in the post on ’em, he scored from the perimeter, killed them on offensive rebounds. He’s been doing a great job of getting to the offensive boards. He scored at all levels.”
Holloway was no slouch, making nine of his 11 shots from the floor while grabbing eight rebounds and blocking six shots.
On Friday, Dec. 16, Yellville-Summit defeated Eureka Springs 68-50 despite 29 points and 14 rebounds from Johnson. Elijah Williams added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The Highlanders played without defensive ace Michael Lester, a junior guard who rolled an ankle against Life Way.
“He wasn’t able to dress and play,” Rambo said. “Yellville-Summit is a really athletic team with guards who can really shoot it. We just couldn’t get many stops without Michael. We couldn’t guard them on the perimeter and we couldn’t keep them out of the paint.”
The Highlanders don’t play again until Jan. 3 at Union Christian Academy.
“He should be healthy by the time we get back to conference play for sure,” Rambo said of Lester.
Eureka Springs’ girls dropped their final two games before the Christmas break, losing to Life Way Christian 4637 on Dec. 13 and to Yellville-Summit 46-20 on Dec. 16.
