Berry avoids runoff, wins 3rd term as mayor

Eureka Springs Mayor Butch Berry was elected to a third term in office in the Nov. 8 general election, receiving more than half the votes cast on a ballot that included four candidates.

Berry received 507 votes, 51.7 percent of all those cast in the election. Tracy Johnson, former events coordinator for the Eureka Springs City Advertising and Commission, finished second with 203 votes. Brandon Cox received 127 votes, while 143 votes were disqualified. Former mayor Beau Zar Satori was also listed as a candidate on the ballot, but a local circuit court judge recently ruled Satori ineligible to run for or serve as mayor.

City council member Autumn Slane defeated Laura Jo Smole to retain the Ward 1, Position 1 seat. Slane received 52.2 percent of the vote.

City council member Melissa Greene won re-election over former council member Bob Thomas in Ward 2, Position 1. Greene received 55.7 percent of the vote.

Challenger Steve Holifield, chair of the city’s Historic District Commission, defeated incumbent Bill Ott for the Ward 2, Position 2 seat. Holifield received 51.1 percent of the vote.

In a countywide race, Republican David Writer avoided a runoff to win election as the next Carroll County Judge.

Writer, currently foreman for the county road department, received 57.7 percent of the vote in a three-man race Writer defeated Democrat James “Rusty” Rusterholz Jr. and independent Kelly Wood.

In local races for seats in the state legislature, Republican Bryan King received 66.5 percent of the vote in Carroll County for the District 28 seat in the state Senate, outdistancing Democrat Jim Wallace. District-wide, King got more than 75.9 percent of the vote. Republican Harlan Breaux won the District 6 seat in the state House of Representatives, defeating Democrat Markeeta Tucker and Libertarian Dakota Logan. Breaux received 60.1 percent of the vote in Carroll County and 62.1 percent district- wide.

The Carroll County results are unofficial. The county election commission will meet Friday, Nov. 18, to certify the results.
