Off-duty parks worker dies in wreck

An off-duty Eureka Springs city employee was killed in a one-vehicle accident last week at Lake Leatherwood City Park.

Mark Current, a shuttle driver and park attendant for the Eureka Springs Parks and Recreation Department, was killed in the accident on Wednesday, Aug. 31 at the park, according to Scott Miskiel, parks director.

Current, who had worked for the city parks department since June, was not working at the time of the accident, Miskiel said.

“The specifics and cause of what happened are not well understood, but we do know that his vehicle exited the roadway and hit a tree,” Miskiel said. “Any more details would have to be obtained from the police department.”

Eureka Springs Police Chief Brian Young said Thursday, Sept. 1 that details of the accident are still being determined.

“The Eureka Springs Police Department, with assistance from Arkansas State Police are currently investigating the accident,” Young said in an email to Carroll County News. “The accident is still an ongoing investigation at this time.” A dispatcher with Arkansas State Police Troop L, based in Lowell, said ASP assisted with traffic control, but any report or investigation would be handled by “Eureka Springs or Carroll County.”

Current was 46, Miskiel said, and was an asset to the parks department in his short time as an employee.

“He was well-liked by our staff and the visitors to the park,” Miskiel said. “He had just started working for us in June but in that brief time had demonstrated a great work ethic, a fondness for nature and an excitement for life. This loss is a shock to all of us.”

“Our condolences go out to his father and the rest of his family and friends,” read a post on the parks department’s Facebook page published Sept. 1. “No other information is available at this time. When additional details are received, they will be shared as appropriate.”
