Paying tribute

On May 21, the Eureka Springs Abendschone Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution paid tribute at the Eureka Springs Cemetery to mark the graves of interred past chapter members. Patriotic American decorations and flags (with NSDAR logos) were placed next to the graves of the chapter’s founding leaders. There are 34 known members’ graves in Eureka Springs cemetery. Organizing members honored were Ruth Fuller Cross; Ruth’s mother, May Obenshain Fuller; Dorothy Fuller Mathews; and Beulah Pitts McBee (May’s niece). The gravesite of longstanding member Fanny Henderson Russ also was honored. Obenshain is said to be the “Americanized” version of the name Abendschone. GPS coordinates are recorded for each member’s gravesite so that the chapter can honor them at future events. This year the flags remained at the gravesites through Memorial Day. Pictured behind the members list are (from left to right) Sharon Lawlor, regent Terri Herman, Nancy Harris and Suzanne Williams.
